Maintenance Free Fascias and Soffits

May 09, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

Older homes are most often built with roofing structures that are outdated based on current technology. One of the areas in particular that has come a long way even within the past few decades is in regards to fascias and soffits. In the past these were made from wood and it took a great deal of maintenance to keep them waterproof. At least every few years they would need to be sanded down and repainted in order to keep water from infiltrating the structure of the home.

Also, fascias and soffits made from wood allowed for creatures of all types to be able to choose through the wood in order to find a place to nest or even last out the winter. Newer uPVC fascias and soffits are totally unlike their wooden counterparts from years gone by. They never need to be painted and creatures certainly don’t like chewing through them. Let’s face it. Plastic is not as fun to chew on as is wood.

Since a fascia is the horizontal band that runs along your home just below the roof line and is the place where gutters are attached to it is imperative to keep them in good repair. This is not only for aesthetic reasons, but also for practical purposes as well. If fascias are in a state of disrepair there is no way they will be able to hold gutters securely enough to enable rainwater to drain off the roof. And after all, that is the ultimate goal of gutters and down pipes.

Whether you have a home that was built with wooden fascias and soffits or are in the midst of the self build home project, you should always consider using maintenance free fascias and soffits and gutters which have been manufactured by Homeline Building Products and are available online through Fasciaexpert.co.uk. In fact, for those who are not in the trade there are instructions for replacing fascias, soffits, gutters and down pipes.

Having a Hot Tub at Home

May 08, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

Having a hot tub can be a very enjoyable experience and there are a great number of healthful benefits that could be gained from owning one. For instance, a hot tub is a great way to relax after a long day which is good for relieving stress. Actually, doctors and medical professionals around the world maintain that a reduction of stress is a powerful tool that can add years to a person’s life.

In addition to be being able to relieve daily stress, there are also other instances where you may need the help of a hot tub to recover from an injury or illness. Amongst the most common ailments treated in a hot tub are sports related injuries such as torn ligaments and muscles. It is well-known that hydrotherapy is one of the most effective therapies for a range of injuries and ailments related to ligaments and muscles.

Although it may seem as though picking up the perfect hot tub will be easy this isn’t necessarily the case as there are so many features which can be totally customised to suit your wants and needs. Some have lovely cascading waterfalls whilst others have built-in iPod players so that anyone enjoying a few stress-free moments in the seclusion of their back garden can listen to the sounds of nature and/or music.

Whether you are looking to relax after a long day at work, heal a few sports related injuries or have a few friends over at week’s end to enjoy a soothing drink and a bit of chat, there is a hot tub perfect for you. Don’t forget that you will also need a bit of lawn and garden furniture when entertaining and these are all available at the same place you choose your hot tub or spa. The number one manufacturer of hot tubs in the UK is Sundance Spas where you will find everything you need to enjoy a bit of hydrotherapy or a fun filled get-together with friends and family.

Great Recipe Ideas for Mother’s Day

May 07, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

Whether you want to cook a three-course extravaganza or bake some delightful cupcakes, show your mum how much you care this Mother’s Day by cooking her something delicious. It is fairly conventional to give a gift like a picture frame or flowers with a sentimental card but cooking a meal requires that extra effort which displays true affection.

It is understandable that kids need help to cook a meal for their mum which is how fathers and relatives can help. Ovens can be dangerous when they get hot, especially hotplates when unattended; trays can become very hot too and cutlery is very sharp. So if the little ones want to help make a meal, make sure that they are supervised at all times.

A quality range cooker from the likes of Britannia Living allows you to cook up a storm and tantalise the taste buds so why not make breakfast in bed and put a smile on your mum’s face on Sunday 18th March. Say thank you to your mum for everything she has done for you by baking a homemade pizza and sprinkling the toppings in the shape of a smiley face; or make a proper roast dinner with chicken, roast potatoes and vegetables.

Give her the day off from cooking to put her feet up and bake blueberry muffins, chocolate cake and jam tarts. Show how much you care by finding out your mum’s favourite dish and making it yourself; so if she likes Italian food bring Venice to the living room with appetising pasta and meatballs. Or if she likes Chinese, cook the classic meal of sweet and sour chicken with rice.

There is a plethora of recipe ideas that you can make this Mother’s Day and you don’t have to spend a fortune to display your gratitude. Just make sure you put all the food on the right temperature and use a timer to remind you when food is done so nothing gets burnt!

What You Should Know about Carbon Monoxide Detectors

May 06, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

Unlike smoke from fires, carbon monoxide (CO) is odourless, tasteless and colourless which means that it is virtually undetectable, even when it is within dangerous limits. Unfortunately, altogether too many people aren’t aware of the fact that a smoke and fire alarms cannot sense the presence of this deadly gas. For this reason, it is suggested that every home be equipped with carbon monoxide detectors placed strategically throughout the home. If only one is to be installed, the best place is within close proximity to the room where you sleep. The recommended distance is within 3 metres.

One of the things to keep in mind when installing a carbon monoxide detector is to keep it away from areas that are humid, consequently they should not be placed in bathrooms or near the sink or stove in the kitchen. Also, they should not be placed near air-conditioning units or heating units that burn fuel because upon start up a small amount of carbon monoxide will be released. However, it is suggested that a carbon monoxide detector be placed within 3 m from every sleeping area and within the garage as well. Some people even place them in the basement which is also a good idea.

Since carbon monoxide is approximately the same gravity as air it will rise as warmer air rises. Keep this in mind when finding placement for your detectors. Each manufacturer may have specific instructions on placement of their products so make sure to read the instructions thoroughly. Whilst smoke detectors warm people of fires carbon monoxide detectors give warning that there are dangerous gases being released, often from fuel-burning devices and some signal a warning with a beeping sound whilst others also have a digital readout for levels. Popular manufacturers of carbon monoxide detectors found on Electric Point are AICO and KIDDIE which can be purchased in either battery-operated or hardwired models.

Choosing Your Next Home Improvement Project

May 05, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

Deciding which part of your home you’d like to renovate during your next home improvement project can be challenging, particularly if the project is going to be geared towards adding aesthetic appeal, as it is easy to imagine any part of your home looking better. Regardless of whether you own a one-bedroom cottage or a five bedroom mansion, determining what you want to commit your temporal and monitored devotion to is no easy task. Renowned luxury home improvement company Trueshopping.co.uk recommends considering the following three home improvement categories to take inspiration for your next project:

Bathroom/Kitchen Enhancements and Accessories

The bathroom and kitchen are two of the most functional areas in your home, with plumbing, sinks, showers, and appliances serving as components that can be updated, repaired, or replaced during a home improvement project. By adding a new shower/bathtub, toilet, sink, tile flooring, towel rack, heater, or other accessories to your bathroom you can greatly improve the comfort and functionality of this integral part of your home. Likewise, installing countertops, updating appliances, and adding accessories to your kitchen are a great way to raise the value of your property while also enhancing liveability.

Renewable Energy Production

Perhaps the most cost-effective and financially beneficial renovation that you could focus on during your next home improvement project would be installing some form of renewable energy production device. Although the cost of having solar panels installed can be quite expensive, the amount of money you’ll save on monthly energy bills in the long run will automatically pay for the initial investment.

Landscaping and Gardening

Sometimes improving the appearance of the outside of your home can be just as advantageous as adding charm to the inside. Quality landscaping and garden furniture not only impresses your neighbours and onlookers, it also gives you a fulfilling hobby that serves as an interesting venue for keeping your mind and body occupied. Whether you want to grow your own food or create artwork in your bushes and hedges, landscaping and gardening endeavours are definitely some of the most enjoyable home improvement projects.

Council tenants’ DIY repairs save £4 billion on housing

May 04, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

In a move that has already begun to anger homeowners across UK housing Minister Grant Shapps intends to offer Council tenants up to £500 annually to make minor repairs instead of calling maintenance every time there is a leaky faucet or a door that will close properly. Unfortunately, homeowners don’t always see this is a good thing even though it can save as much as £4 billion from the national housing budget.

UK homeowners are struggling to make their own mortgage payments and have families to raise. They believe they should be rewarded as well for taking care of themselves without asking for government help in paying their bills and making repairs on their homes. It is understandable that these hard-working homeowners would be upset that government funds are not available for them but ministers believe they are not looking at the big picture.

It’s all about being able to save the government £4 billion each year so that the money can be better used with other programmes. If Council tenants can learn to make many of the repairs themselves it will save the government money and also provide a few extra pounds for those people who have been made redundant or are in effect unemployable.

Statistically, social housing landlords are actually responsible for millions of homes, the latest figures show that there are 4 million homes on the social housing scheme. If each of those homes averaged approximately £1 thousand annually for repairs, then governments plan to spend half that amount of money sounds like a very good thing in theory.

Whether or not this new scheme works is yet to be seen but Council tenants are being urged to take part in the programme whilst learning to make their own repairs. Government saves money, tenants earn money and by shopping online at sites like The Plumb Store products can be found at costs that are just above wholesale. Tenants can learn how to make the repairs themselves with instructions provided and it may even find that they have aptitude to learn a new trade.

Economical Upgrades and Remodels

May 03, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

The general consensus in the UK is that the housing market is shot, at least for the time being. Homeowners feel no good will come of making improvements on their homes, not as far as the value goes anyway. Most have simply given up on the prospect of trying upgrades in order to realise a better price for their home. However, this has not stopped people from purchasing the necessary materials for doing their own remodels when it comes to the kitchen and bathroom.

Property developer, Sarah Beeny has stated that she believes homeowners are still keen on keeping their kitchens and bathrooms in the best possible shape. It is not out of the ordinary to see a UK citizen getting ready to undertake a bathroom remodel or a kitchen upgrade. The difference between now and back some years ago is that homeowners are no longer contracting businesses to do this work but instead taking the less expensive road and using the DIY method.

This is not to say that homes with better kitchens and bathrooms and all around upgrades will not be worth more once the economy does get back into shape, but for now it seems to be that people are making the improvements for their families and themselves rather than to up the cost of their homes. Since one of the largest banks in the UK has released statistics that show housing prices to be down some 2.2%, no one is very hopeful at this time about selling anyway. However, people still want to find a way to keep their space nice and liveable and for this reason DIY is the best option for most.

Bio: BestBathrooms, located in Lancashire has been in business for over three decades. They have always offered the largest inventory of bathroom and kitchen products and today continue that quest through their large online store. Not only does this company back their products with a 30 day money back guarantee but their prices almost cannot be beat.

How Important Is It That UK Places Of Worship Are Repaired?

May 02, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

In the last 10 years the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has invested £155 million into repair grants for places of worship across the UK and now a further £15 million worth of funding has been set aside. Administered by the English Heritage, the HLF is funding to support urgent repairs to 153 of England’s most important Grade I and II listed churches, chapels and temples. But how important is this?

The vital grants help to repair places of worship at risk of closing down across the country from Lancaster to Canterbury. These historic places of worship are deemed irreplaceable parts of British heritage and play important roles within local communities. The extra funding maintains the places of worship and safeguards the congregations for future generations.

The buildings are dubbed places of spiritual discovery and a great resource for architectural treasures, landmarks and events venues therefore the grants offer much needed funds to the volunteers. One of the Grade I listed parish churches at risk includes the St Leonard’s Church in East London which was built in 1736 and will receive £193,000 in grants. It will now undergo vital repairs to its roof and gutters.

Another example of a place of worship which has been awarded funding is the Roman Catholic Church of the Good Shepherd in Nottingham which has been given £119,000. Built in 1964, the Grade II listed building suffers concrete cancer, reinforcement delay and eroding so the monies will remove the damaging rainwater from its flat roof, replace the building’s roof membrane, and replace fascia panels.

Odd Mattresses for Renovating Older RVs

May 01, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

The cost of purchasing a new RV is often so absurd that many people choose to buy used motor homes to use for holidays and travelling about the country. Many have sound motors and work extremely well but are in need of some interior renovations to make them comfortable whilst on holiday. Also, there are a greater number of people than ever before who need to work away from home as there are no jobs to be had where they live. Rather than moving the family about as contract jobs come up, they simply travel from job to job in their RV.

As daft as this sounds, it has become a reality and one that is gaining in momentum by the day. When renovating an older RV, it would be virtually impossible to find the right size mattresses to fit current bases in the motor home so companies like The Odd Mattress Company are called upon to craft a mattress to fit the base. Also, the base that is in the motor home may not be exactly what the owner needs so an odd size bed base is required to serve a specific purpose. Some RVs have beds with drawers underneath whilst others didn’t allow for this need.

If a the owner is going to be spending any amount of time in the RV, it is probably necessary to have a specially sized divan bed base designed to fit in a small space whilst also having drawers built in to provide extra storage. Some RV companies do have mattresses to fit those areas, but they will not provide the amount of support necessary to provide a proper night’s sleep. A bespoke divan bed base and mattress can offer the best in support whilst adding space for storage. This is the best option available when renovating an older RV simply because you can choose a size and thickness that works best for you.

Kitchen Conservatories in High Demand

Apr 21, 2012 Posted by Don No Comments » Posted in Home Improvement

So many older homes in the UK already have a lovely conservatory which has gone unused, maybe even for generations. Commonly these structures were attached to homes and quite often as an extension of the kitchen where the ‘gardener’ had easy access to running water to care for the plants. As well, many conservatories were meant to house edible plants and herbs and being located near the kitchen made a great deal of sense. However, as TV dinners and fast food surfaced, fewer families actually grew their own fruits and vegetables and those lovely conservatories were soon neglected.

Roof Cozy UK have found that kitchen conservatories are now in high demand, but from another perspective altogether. Where families once enjoyed family meals in a more formal dining room, current custom sees them congregated in the kitchen for a warm and friendly meal. Formal dining is really not huge in today’s fast-paced society which is why many dining rooms have been converted to family rooms and dens. Unfortunately, many kitchens were never meant to be eaten in so they are too small to comfortably seat a family for meals. A conservatory adjoining the kitchen is the ideal location to extend the kitchen and with a bit of planning, this can be the ‘new dining room’ of the 21st century.

One thing to bear in mind is that most conservatories which have been neglected are not properly insulated to keep cold out in the winter or block the ultra-hot rays of the sun during summer months. The solution to this is to insulate the roof without altering the structure of the current roof. Many older homes in the North West of England do indeed have existing conservatories and the current trend is to renovate them for useable space. Conservatory roof insulation, Manchester and in the surrounding areas can be the solution to providing comfort for those congenial family meals in a sunny room which begs to be enjoyed.
